Indigo dyed hand woven organic cotton crepe scarf

I have been waiting, not patiently, for spring to arrive so I could do some indigo dyeing. Finally, it got warm enough and last weekend my friend Sheila and I set up a dye vat.

One of the first into this spring’s dye bath was a pale turquoise cotton crinkle scarf. The colour was not intense enough and it was boring!

Handwoven organic cotton makes a luscious scarf, with a super fine crepe texture. I absolutely love the result. It is the scarf on the right hand side below.

These three indigo dyed crinkle scarves are so easy to care for. They can be machine washed in gentle and machine dried too. Ideal travel companions, wrapped around neck, shoulders or folded under to rest your head. Twist to pack, shake out and wear. You will always be elegantly dressed! Bon voyage!

Pastel Travel Scarves Snow Dyed for Spring

February has been a great month for snow dyeing. I think we got most of our snow during this month. In preparation for spring weather, I dyed these scarves in a variety of lighter shades. The one on the left reminds me of Pantone’s color of the year: PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral. I am rinsing out shades of blue and green as well.

While I had the scarves together and was admiring the colours, my son picked up one of the snow dyed scarves and promptly named it: Pink Flamingo. I laughed and challenged him to name them all! So here they are:

  • Lively Marsh
  • Safari Dusk
  • Soft Radiance
  • Peach Cobbler

Can you match the name to the scarf?

My favorite hand dyed scarves

So many factors of the dyeing process contribute to making each scarf unique: fibre content, dye colours, amount of snow used, amount of dye used and folding techniques.

Every time I hand dye, I am surprised and happy with the results.

I have kept busy this winter creating a line of unique and beautiful snow dyed scarves.

The Canadian snow collection of hand dyed scarves need to be seen in person to appreciate the subtle changes of colour and pattern. No two scarves are the same and no scarf is identical from one end to the other!

Clothing labels

Labels are attached to objects to identify and describe that item. I am happy to have received my woven cloth labels from the Dutch Label Shop. These silky, soft labels are now going to identify my hand dyed scarves long after the package they arrive in is gone.

The labels are small and soft, so they are unobtrusive when the scarf is being worn. Of course, I won’t mind if you flaunt your designer label!

Hand Dyed Shibori Scarves – Part 2

The best part of dyeing your own fabrics are the beautiful colours you can mix.

Turquoise and blue are beautiful together. I think this would pair nicely with a pair of jeans and navy blazer for the spring.

With the scarf above, I wanted to try to create a plaid design. This scarf was folded, wrapped and dipped three times. Each time, the resist I used was larger, covering up more of the scarf and the dye bath was intensified.

I will try this technique again, and try for a little more variation between the first two dye baths.

Coral and brown are always a great colour combination. This scarf was tightly twisted before being dyed.

Cerulean blue and black used to dye the scarf above. The same twisting technique was used as in the coral and brown scarf, but, this was not twisted as tightly. You can see that the dye penetrated the entire scarf with no light spots.

The scarf above was dyed using the Parfait method described by Ann Johnston in her book: Color by Accident. The scarf was first submerged in yellow, then turquoise and finally in the gray. I love the colours together – it looks like two completely different scarves, when it’s folded in half.

All of these scarves are available for purchase: $40.00 each. They are 17″ wide and 70″ long. They are easy to care for: machine wash and air dry. They are a great way to add some colour to your wardrobe this spring!

Hand Dyed Shibori Scarves – Part 1

I found some beautiful rayon/linen fabric that I sewed up into scarves. The fabric has a lovely drape and dyes beautifully.
